Her pen and voice amplified the yearnings of all progressive people of the world to create an economically equitable, socially just and ecologically sustainable human society. Condemnation Statement by BAA
Bhumi
Adhikar Andolan (BAA) strongly condemns the heinous killing of senior
journalist Gauri lankesh. Gauri was shot dead in the evening of 5th
September 2017 her residence in Bengaluru’s Rajarajeshwari Nagar. She
was the editor of ‘Gauri Lankesh Patrika’ a weekly Kannada journal,
besides owning some other publications. She also continued to write on
and engage with various social and developmental issues and constantly
raised her voice against injustices. She continued the legacy of her
father P. Lankesh, an eminent journalist and a well known writer and
literary critique. Gauri Lankesh was a bold and unflinching independent
journalist who wrote tirelessly against communal fascists in India and
she was assassinated because of her sharp writing, bold views and
unequivocal nature in criticizing communalism and Hindutva politics.
She
was also convicted of criminal defamation for an article that she had
published in 2008. BJP MP Prahlad Joshi and Umesh Dhursi had raised
objections against it, which resulted in a six-month sentence and fine
for Gauri Lankesh. She had received bail on the same day. But this
attempt to silence her from questioning the fascist forces didn’t
demoralize her. Standing for the values of republic; pluralism,
democracy, debate without violence; Gauri always remained the flag
bearer of freedom of expression. Hers, including the murders of writers
and rationalists including Narendra Dabholkar, Govind Pansare and MM
Kalburgi, is a targeted political assassination meant to keep an
atmosphere of terror against those who question the system standing by
the oppressed.

organizations involved in provocation and conspiration.
